'Learn the positive traits of the Japanese'
Monday, July 9, 2007
OBSERVE and adapt the enviable and positive qualities inherent in the Japanese community that have enabled them to progress as one of the most developed countries in the world, a group of youths were told Saturday.
Bound for Fukuoka, Japan, the group consisting of local students and officials will attend the 19th Asia Pacific Children's Convention (APCC) for 13 days, starting from July 13.
In a flag-handing over ceremony at the Menglait Secondary School, the Acting Director of Schools and guest of honour, Hjh Aishah Hj Muhd Husain pointed out the qualities that the Japanese are renowned for work ethics, discipline, industrious, competitiveness, respect for one another, cooperation, punctuality and obedience, among others. These characteristics have helped propel them to the front of the world economy, she added.
Hjh Aishah continued that if the participants can learn and practice these traits, they can gain much in terms of ambition, discipline, diligence and success in any field they wish to explore.
However, while these are positive and admirable developments, at the same time the participants should retain essential Bruneian qualities, such as courtesy, gentle speech and mannerisms.
They should also preserve the sanctity of Islam and the good name of the country throughout their stay in "the land of the rising sun", said the acting director.
The APCC brings together representatives from 57 nations in the region annually to interact culturally and socially.
According to the Auckland City Council website, the APCC is a non-governmental, non-profitable organisation and civic movement that is funded by public subsidies and donations.
Participants will involve in an orientation camp before being sent on home-stay programmes with Japanese families for the rest of their trip.
