Marketplace expansion to boost SMEs' economy

Friday, July 13, 2007

MORE business opportunities will be opened for stall vendors at the Gerai Telisai in the Tutong District with the expansion of the marketplace.

In an interview with The Brunei Times Tutong district officer Hj Jamain Momin said the expansion was an effort to organise the marketplace as there were vendors operating in makeshift stalls in the building.

Since March this year, the Tutong District Office has received a lot of applications for Miscellaneous Licenses (Lesen Rampaian) to operate stalls.

" The office is very concerned with the improper ways the vendors organise makeshift stalls," the district officer said.

Hj Jamain said that the expansion "is the first in a list of improvements the district office is planning to undertake. Also in the process of implementation for the complex are some basic amenities like washrooms and parking spaces."

The district officer said that the marketplace is located at a very strategic location, which is along the only road linking the Brunei-Muara, Tutong and the Belait Districts.

He went on to say that the place is a stopover point for commuters passing through, so there is a potential for growth in the area.

According to a statement issued by the Tutong District Office, the expansion of the marketplace is also aimed at facilitating local small and medium businesses in an effort to boost the Tutong economy.

Moreover the marketplace has become a favourite place for local residents, not only to buy goods but also as a place to congregate. Thus the expansion indirectly supports the social life of the community of the area as well, the statement said.

Currently there are eight stalls at Gerai Telisai and the expansion will bring the total to 20 stalls. The construction work on the expansion is expected to be completed in two months at the cost of approximately $21,000.

The acting district officer led the ground breaking ceremony yesterday for the expansion of the current site.

Also present were the assistant Tutong district officer, Hj Muhammad Suffian Hj Bungsu, acting penghulu and village head well as residents of Mukim Telisai.
