Rainy weather did not dampen celebrations

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

STALL owners participating in the annual festival in conjuction with His Majesty's birthday celebrations were dismayed last night when clouds threatened an otherwise profitable business.

Last night saw the third day of business for the the small and medium entrepreneurs participating in the nightly bazaars. The parking lots designated to house these bazaars has come alive every night since July 15, and will continue to do so until the end of the celebrations. Despite the rainy weather, the stalls and organisers do what they can to keep attracting people.

According to an employee at a restaurant stall, the competition for business is fierce. He said that they had to create eye-catching displays and signs to attract customers, adding: "We try everything we can to be special."

A manager who declined to be named at the Mulaut Abattoir Sdn Bhd stall said that one of the crowd-pullers is the nightly performances. So far, the busiest period had been the night of His Majesty's birthday on July 15, when there was a fireworks display, he pointed out. The company has stalls in both the Jubilee Park in Kiulap and opposite the Royal Regalia building in the capital. One of his complaints was that the stall in Kiulap was too far from the performance stage, thus drawing lesser customers. Last night's performance saw a singing competition for youths held at the Jubilee Park. According to Pg Saakdiah Pg Hj Omar, the event coordinator for the night, the competition - known as Musical Nostalgia - was designed to be more challenging as participants had to sing songs from the sixties.

"The youth are used to singing pop songs and performing rock music, let them try the sixties," said Pg Saakdiah. Eight youths performed last night, singing sixties ballads, street performances, solo, group and band performances.
