His Majesty's monument inaugurated

Monday, July 23, 2007

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday put the finishing touches on a waterfront monument overlooking Kampong Ayer during a get-together ceremony celebrating the monarch's 61st birthday celebrations.

The monument's granite and marble-tiled compound area was packed with photographers and eager onlookers yesterday morning as the monarch inked his signature in gold on a plaque next to the gold-plated structure.

Two upward spirals - fitted with lighting for nighttime effects - adorn the number six of the structure, which resembles the number '60' in Arabic. A gold ball sits on the ground adjacent to the structure surrounded by five mini-minarets.

Some 61 well-known individuals and groups who had sponsored the monument's construction took the opportunity to have a group photograph taken with the beloved ruler in front of the capital's latest place of interest.

Critics of the proposal to turn the former site of the Immigration Control Post (located next to the monument) into a heritage site, who argued that the old building blocks the view of Kampong Ayer, may have been silenced. With a promenade and sheltered benches, the commemorative monument will provide an alternative spot for tourists and locals alike to take afternoon strolls while enjoying arguably the best view of the famed water village. The first foundation stones for the monument were laid in January this year by Home Affairs Minister Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Awg Adanan, following calls from the minister for more efforts in adding new attractions for Bruneians and tourists to enjoy during this year's celebrations.

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office in a sabda during the third meeting of the National Committee on His Majesty's 61st birthday celebrations in May this year said, "...This consolidation and unity is also exemplified by the completion of the 'Mercu Dirgahayu 60'... a gift that signifies the perpetual love of the citizens and residents for His Majesty and also a manifestation of our people's heartfelt reverence for His Majesty in bringing forth unity, peace, prosperity and development to Brunei Darussalam."
