Russian author awaits exclusive info

Tuesday, July 24, 2007

THE Russian author who is to write His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's unofficial biography, is still waiting for some exclusive information for the book.

In a meeting with The Brunei Times, Sergey Plekhanov talked about the progress on the biography and various other topics.

"I found a lot of information in the libraries of Brunei, but it is difficult to get exclusive information, and I cannot take information from books and Internet only," said Sergey. He added that while he also had his own materials, it depends on Brunei now to help develop the biography.

When asked what his impression was about the monarch, Sergey described His Majesty as a leader of the 21st century who combines traditions and modern culture.

"His Majesty is a simple person, a man among us, but he is a Sultan," he replied.

Speaking on His Majesty's titah in conjunction with the ruler's 61st birthday last week, the writer described it as the "voice of the ruler who displays absolute authority".

The writer said the titah highlighted the development of SMEs, an important issue which Russia was trying to push foward as well.

He said Brunei and Russia share one thing in common: dependency on the so-called 'fragrant industry', which is the oil and gas industry.

While in Brunei, Sergey had the opportunity to visit Kampong Ayer. He also went to Temburong District to see for himself what the district has to offer in terms of ecotourism. Sergey said that while Temburong has potential, it needs more investment to develop the area to attract tourists. The Russian writer and journalist will be leaving the country tomorrow.
