INSTILLING love and interest in mathematics and science was the main focus of the week-long list of activities for the students of Sayyidina Ali Secondary School.

The maths and science week, which was themed "Bridging the world with science and math", concluded yesterday with students showcasing the various skills they had learned during the week, and an award presentation to recognise students who had excelled.

The school's principal, Cheong Huat Joo, welcomed the guest of honour, Acting Director of the Agricultural Department Hjh Normah Suria Hayati Pehin JDSMDSU Hj Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri.

In his opening speech, Cheong articulated some of the objectives that the students were hoped to accomplish.

First he stressed on the importance of math and science in the development of the local technical and socio-economic scene, as well as that of rest of the world.

Also highlighted under the objectives was the necessary provision of exposure for students to substantial scientific and mathematic concepts.

Some of the activities that students took part in included a logo-designing competition for the math and science week, a math and science quiz and a health lecture, which carried a video communicating the importance of the ecosystem and the threat of global warming.

During the week, the students also had the chance to visit the Jerudong Park Medical Centre and the Sungai Liang Recreational Park. In addition, the students also got together to compose and perform a song dedicated to the Heart of Borneo project, which emphasises on the conservation of natural rainforest.

Joo expressed his hopes that the activities had made a positive impact on the students.

Guests at the closing ceremony were also treated to a slide presentation of the Math and Science Week 2007 and some student performances.
