Sunday, July 29, 2007

STUDENTS of vocational and technical institutions in the country have been getting their mathematical skills sharpened this week due to the 2nd Mathematics Week, organised by the Mathematics Department of the Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College in collaboration with the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC), Seria.

Yesterday afternoon saw the closing of the 2nd Mathematics Week where the 4th Inter Vocational and Technical Institution Mathematics Quiz Competition Final was conducted as well as a prize presentation ceremony.

The closing ceremony marks the climax of a week of activities that began on July 24 where students carried out creative and critical thinking as well as interactive and hands-on activities.

One popular activity that was carried out was 'Mathemagic' where the audience was treated to a number of mind-boggling illusions presented by Mr Masaaki Takahashi.

The students were also treated to an enlightening talk entitled 'Why Maths Have To Do With Environment?' conducted by Dr Saiful Azmi Awang Husain from the Department of Mathematics, Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

Another popular activity was the 2nd Mathematics Tech Challenge, which saw 25 teams taking part in solving problems with the use of limited materials, testing their critical analysis skills. This activity was jointly organised with OGDC.

These activities aimed to show the students the fun and mind stimulating side to mathematics and that it is not just about formulas and theorems.

Guest of honour at the closing ceremony was Noorhaizamdin Haji Mosbi, Acting Director of the Department of Technical Education, Ministry of Education.

In his speech, the acting director stated that learning mathematics is not something that can be outgrown, students at any level or age need the occasional motivation and stimulation to learn and enjoy learning.

He also commented on the common misperception of mathematics as a tedious and boring subject.

In light of this, the acting director urged teachers and educators alike to try and change the prevailing mindset among students and in the society at large.

"A nation that is weak in these areas will inevitably experience difficulty in keeping up with other countries," he said, adding that, "we may be small in numbers but if we are good at numbers, there will be a great demand for our skills."

Due to the encouraging response of the 2nd Mathematics Week, the guest of honour also encouraged all vocational and technical institutions to organise more of these beneficial activities.

Following the speech by the guest of honour was the 4th Inter Vocational and Technical Institution Mathematics Quiz Competition Final where three teams, Laksamana College of Business, Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College and Jefri Bolkiah College of Engineering competed against each other.

Emerging victorious was the Laksamana College of Engineering with six points ahead of the second place winner, Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College.

Presentation of prizes were then awarded to winners of activities performed during the mathematics week and the 4th Inter Vocational and Technical Institution Mathematics Quiz Competition. The Brunei Times
