Art of gulintangan must be preserved

Tuesday, July 31, 2007

THE Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College was crowned champion of this years' gulintangan finals competition held yesterday held at the PAP Hajah Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah Secondary School in Lumut.

The 13th annual gulintangan competition was held as part of an annual activity organised by the Co-Curriculum Department, of the Ministry of Education with the support of secondary schools and colleges nationwide.

One of the aims of the competition is to perpetuate and preserve the art of gulintangan so that it will not be forgotten by future generations. This in turn coincides with the gulintangan competition which can be taken as a collective effort of the Bruneian community in order to sustain this creative skill of gulintangan.

Hj Mohamad Hj Abd Rahman, the Belait district officer and guest of honour at the event, in his speech highlighted that, "although (playing) gulintangan is declining, it is not less important because it is worth saving from the aspect of national heritage."

He spoke of hope that future generations would preserve and carry on the art of gulintangan so that it remains a national heritage to be enjoyed by everyone in the future.

Another emphasis that was placed by Hj Mohamad was that, "It is the responsibility of all local Bruneians to defend the custom, art and culture of Brunei that has existed for centuries because if it is lost then the very name of what we call Brunei will be lost too".

He added that, "If we do not try to uphold it then in return it will further cause Brunei to weaken and scatter".

Another aim of the competition was to extract hidden talents amongst Bruneian students and to exhibit the creative ability in combining the use of traditional musical instruments and contemporary musical instruments in order to create a new form of melody.

This was described to be an effort for gulintangan to become a far more adaptable and dynamic instrument, especially today in the age of advancement in technology.

The advantages of preserving gulintangan will not only be beneficial for the younger generation but for the whole of Brunei too as it rests on them to be carried forward so that their children will be able to enjoy the beauty of an instrument that has existed for centuries.

Second place was awarded to Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School and third place was taken by Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Secondary School.
