HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday consented to bestow honourary medals to 223 people. The investiture ceremony, held in conjunction with the monarch's 61st birthday celebrations took place at Istana Nurul Iman's Throne Hall.
The monarch, flanked by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and His Royal Highness Prince Abdul 'Azim presented 40 people with 'The Most Honourable Order of the Crown of Brunei' (Darjah Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei Yang Amat Mulia) Third Class (SMB) medals. This award, founded by the late Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien on March 1, 1954, is awarded in three classes.
Six people received 'The Most Eminent Order of Islamic Religious Order of the State of Brunei' (Darjah Seri Ugama Islam Negara Brunei Yang Amat Bersinar), with two receiving Fourth Class (SUB) medals, and four that received Fifth Class (PUB) medals. This award was founded by His Majesty on August 1, 1968, and is awarded in five classes.
Some 177 people were highly honoured to receive 'The Most Blessed Order of Loyalty to the State of Brunei' (Darjah Setia Negara Brunei Yang Amat Bahagia) Fourth Class (PSB) medals. This award was founded by Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien on November 29, 1959, and is awarded in four classes. Yesterday's ceremony was witnessed by nobility, cabinet ministers, foreign envoys and senior government officials.
Honours awarded by His Majesty can be divided into two categories — Decoration Orders and medals.
State decorations are commonly awarded on His Majesty's birthday by the monarch himself. When there are too many recipients to be awarded on the day, some will be awarded by His Majesty at smaller ceremonies after the birthday. Medals are also given out by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince.
