Blogger rallies support

Saturday, August 4, 2007

SUPPORT and well-wishes for Desmond Chin, the 20-Year-old Seria leukaemia patient, has begun pouring in from across the globe via the Internet.

This is thanks to local blogger and photographer Jan Shim, who on his own initiative spread word about Desmond Chin's plight through his blog.

After reading about Desmond's situation in The Brunei Times, he was moved to publicise the story on his blog.

"The response has been amazing, with well-wishes coming from Microsoft USA, UK, China, Singapore, Malaysia and many from Brunei too," said Shim.

He mentioned that fellow prominent bloggers such as Reeda Malik aka AnakBrunei, RanoAdidias and David Cheok had also shown their support on their respective websites.

"People from various countries have asked if they could donate via PayPal so I have decided to make donation via PayPal available to everyone who prefers this over wire transfers," he said. Paypal is a widely-trusted online payment system.

Apart from blog entries, Shim is also using his instant messenger accounts to increase publicity, to help Desmond meet his target.

Shim, who was only recently introduced to Desmond, occasionally visits him at his residence in Kampung Sungai Bera.

"When I visit him, I try to not bring up the subject of his illnesses, so we talk about other things such as photography because I think all he wants right now is a friend," said Shim. Upon discovering that Desmond had never had a studio portrait taken of him, Shim threw together a setting and had this righted in no time.

Desmond, who suffers from T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia,is "doing fine", although his white blood cell count is still quite high. He is still $30,000 short, but has expressed his gratiture for everyone's help and support.

Yesterday he remarked that he was surprised but grateful for the online publicity, and even logged on to Shim's website a few times to thank his well-wishers.The Brunei Times
