A LOCAL has been sentenced for cheating a man out of $400, leading the victim to believe the money was warranty for a court case.
Ahmad Hj Tamam was imposed a $8,000 fine and four months' imprisonment by the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate Court yesterday under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
According to the Anti-Corruption Bureau, their investigations revealed that Ahmad and Alias Hj Omar misled the victim to deliver the said amount on August 2, 2001 at the basement parking area of the Arts and Handicrafts Centre in Jalan Residency.
The payment supposedly served as a bond to settle a case under the Religious Council and Kadhi Courts Acts, which involved the victim and his friends. Both men claimed trial, where the prosecution team produced 11 witnesses. After trial, the Court found Ahmad guilty for the charge and acquitted Alias. The Brunei Times
