Thursday, August 9, 2007
TOGETHER with their proud parents, 42 students were celebrated for their success on being awarded the 2007/08 government's 'A' level scholarships to the United Kingdom. The function took place at the Ministry of Education, yesterday.
The gathering, organised for the students to get to know their peers and also officials from the ministry, was attended by the Deputy Minister of Education, Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad Pengiran Hj Abdul Rahman.
In his speech, the deputy minister spoke of the new investments in the ministry of education in its efforts to add more facilities and incentives for the country's young generation to continue their studies. This is manifested in the selection of reputable institutions, and in the fields that are required by the country.
Besides the Special Educational Scheme scholarships awarded to 20 students, the ministry has also introduced two new scholarship programmes this year, namely the Department of Economic, Planning and Development's Excellent Student Fund Scholarship, whereby 19 students became the recipients, and the Civil Service Scholarships which were given to three students. According to Pg Dato Dr Hj Mohammad, the short-term aim of the investment was to produce skilled, professional and qualified citizens, to develop the country's human resource sector. An optimistic aim in the long run was for the students, upon completing their first degree, to continue their education to a master's degree.
Skills can be obtained from an in-depth exploration, such as in the field of research. "This is the country's aspiration," said the deputy minister.
Addressing the students, he hoped that they would be ready to meet this challenge and be driven to excel in their fields of study. They were also expected to be patriotic, as they would endure future obstacles and difficulties in the pursuit of success for themselves, their families, religion, and the country.
The deputy minister extended his congratulations to the students, who according to him, were mini ambassadors representing the country.
He reminded them that they would be judged on various aspects including their morals, social, mental and intellectual capabilities, as well as competitive abilities.
"Therefore, a word of advice from me would be to do your best," said the deputy minister.
To prepare them for their study life overseas, the students have been undergoing several courses and briefing sessions prior to their departure at the end of this month.
