A BUS heading to Bangkok caught fire and overturned on a Thai highway, killing 29 people and injuring 35, most of them suffering severe burns, police said yesterday.

Passengers heading from the northeastern province of Yasothorn were aware of the fire in the engine at the back, but the brakes failed and the driver could not stop the bus, they said.

"We have a lot of casualties because the bus could not be stopped," said police Colonel Nisakorn Boonyatanont of Muak Lek, a dairy farm town 130 km northeast of Bangkok where the bus crashed.

The bodies were burned beyond recognition and the victims have not been identified.

TV footage showed rescue workers covering charred bodies stuck to seats with white cloth.

An average of three people an hour are killed on Thailand's roads, but Tuesday's accident was one of the worst in recent years. Agencies
