Accomplices of al-Qaeda bomb plotter jailed

Saturday, June 16, 2007

SEVEN members of a British-based cell led by convicted al-Qaeda "dirty" bomb plotter Dhiren Barot were sentenced to jail terms ranging from 15 to 26 years yesterday.

The seven were sentenced in Woolwich Crown Court in southeast London after they were found guilty of a plot to carry out attacks in Britain and the United States using explosive-packed limousines and a "dirty" radiation bomb.

"Anyone who chooses to participate in such a plan ... will receive little sympathy from the courts," judge Sir Alexander Butterfield said in sentencing the seven men.

Qaisar Shaffi, 28, was jailed for 15 years after he was convicted of conspiracy to murder after a month-long trial which ended earlier this week.

The other six pleaded guilty in conspiracy to cause explosions likely to endanger life.

Abdul Aziz Jalil, 34, was jailed for 26 years, Junade Feroze, 31, for 22 years, while Mohammed Naveed Bhatti, 27, and Nadeem Tarmohamed, 29, were sentenced to 20 years each in prison.

Zia Ul Haq, 28, was given 18 years and Omar Abdur Rehman, 23, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Barot, a 34-year-old Muslim convert, was jailed for life last November after he admitted plotting synchronised attacks in Britain and the United States which could have killed "hundreds if not thousands".Barot was convicted of planning attacks on buildings in London and the capital's transport systems. Possible targets were said to be the Heathrow Express or an explosion on an underground train while in a tunnel under the Thames.

In the US, Barot planned to target the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington.AFP
