JIS out to grab Under-15, Under-17 titles

Sunday, March 4, 2007

JERUDONG INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL are hoping for a double celebration in today's finals of the Brunei Rugby Football Union Under-15 and Under-17 leagues at the Royal Brunei Armed Forces camp in Berakas.

With the Under-15 final between JIS and the Belait Pythons kicking off at 9.30am and the Under-17 final between JIS and the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin College Knights an hour later, JIS head coach Mark Pyrgos is hoping that his teams' hard work in training will pay off.

But just because both of his teams have reached the finals doesn't mean that they are guaranteed victory and Pyrgos is keeping the champagne on ice for now.

"Both teams have proven to be very tough opponents over the course of the two-month season and SOAS have beaten us twice,"said Pyrgos.

"However, I'm hoping we have learnt from our mistakes and if I didn't think we would win then why would we even show up," added the 47-year-old Pyrgos.

SOAS coach Ben Bourne is hoping that his team's speed, skills and tenacious defending will carry them to their third win over JIS.

Confident of his team's ability to do well in spite of their inexperience most of his players have only been playing rugby for three months, Bourne said their commitment in training had helped turn them into one of the most feared teams in the league.

"We went undefeated during the season, and their voracious tackling will prove to be a barrier to any of our opponents," said Bourne, who runs gruelling training sessions.

"I run into them during practice, so if they can tackle me, they can tackle anyone," stated the Samoan.

Though Belait Pythons' Under-15 head coach James Chiew Fah Nam might not carry out such punishing training, he is optimistic that his team's pace and ball handling skills will win them the trophy.

"The players have been dreaming about winning today and my stand-off and full-back are capable leaders," said the 24-year-old.

An Under-13 touch rugby demonstration involving two JIS teams, International School Brunei as well as Pengiran Dato Sharifuddin School will be held at 8.45am to help introduce and promote rugby to younger students.
