THE Brunei contingent of 12 students left for the Eighth Asean Age Group Chess Championship in Pattaya, Thailand yesterday with their eyes set on returning with medals.
Headed by Sabli Metussin, the Brunei Chess Federation treasurer and captain for the 10-day event which starts tomorrow, they are accompanied by national chess coach Tair Vahidov.
Competing in classical, rapid and blitz events, the team consist of nine boys and three girls, who will participate in the Under-8, Under-10, Under-12, Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 categories.
Organised by the World Chess Federation, the Bruneians didn't win anything last year, and so are looking to change that this time around.
One of the country's medal hopes lies in 18-year-old Yee Soon Wei, who is competing in his fifth Asean Age Group Chess Championship.
Having won a bronze in 2005 and a silver and bronze in 2004, the Sayiddina Ali Secondary School student also represented Brunei at the Chess Olympiad in Torino, Italy last year.
"I will definitely try my best to finish with a medal, and I hope I can put the experience I've gained over the years to good use in Thailand," said Yee.
