Thailand win ninth Asean Ports futsal final

Saturday, June 30, 2007

THRILLING the fans at the National Indoor Stadium with a goal fiesta, Thailand won the futsal final of the 9th Asean Ports Association Sports Meet after defeating Indonesia 6-3 yesterday afternoon.

Though the Thais took control of the match early on with their confident passing, the Indonesians were content to sit back and absorb the pressure.

However, it were the Indonesians who were the first to find the back of the net, when Tri Hartanto scored off a corner in what was the team's first attack of the game.

Doubling their lead a minute later through Djusman during a swift counter-attack, the Thais were now down 2-0 in the first five minutes and called a time-out to regroup.

Coming out charging after the breather, they continued to pen the Indonesians in their own half and used their short quick passing to move the ball around.

Obviously the more technical and tactical shown by the two nations, Thailand however, opened their account minutes after the time-out after a scramble in front of the box.

Having the lion's share of possession, the Thais' prolonged spell of pressure paid off when Udom Taveesuk equalised four minutes before half time.

And when Kittisak Taveesuk gave the Thais the lead for the first time 30 seconds before half time, it was evident that the tides had changed.

Captain Pongsak Khongkeaw gave Thailand a two-goal cushion within 70 seconds of the second half after latching on to a rebound, and substitute Somkuan Chankhao made it 5-2 when he connected on a corner just moments after stepping onto the court.

Never looking like mounting a comeback, Indonesia lacked support on the attack and their players were easily out-muscled by the Thais.

Indonesia's Djusman got his second when he was the first to the ball after the Thai goalie saved a spot kick, but their trouble in clearing their lines was exploited yet again when Pongpipat Kamnuan made it 6-3 a minute before the final whistle.

Kamnuan was named the best player of the tournament, while Khongkeaw was awarded the top scorer award after bagging eight goals throughout the duration of the tournament.

Ending yesterday with the closing ceremony at the Multipurpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex, the meet brought together a total of 323 participants and officials from eight Asean nations for four days of competition in six sports.
