And now for Golden Boot!

Friday, August 3, 2007

NOW that Shahrazen Md Said has helped steer DPMM FC into third place for this season's Malaysian Super League campaign, the league's top scorer will have his eye on the Golden Boot award come the season finale tomorrow.

Scoring a brace in DPMM's 3-1 away win against Penang on Wednesday night, the striker has cemented his position as the league's top scorer with 21 goals in 23 matches a remarkable achievement for a player who spent most of last season on the bench.

Facing leaders Kedah at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium tomorrow, Shahrazen will be hoping for a quiet night from Marlon Alex James who is hot on the Bruneian's trail with 20 goals, as is Perak's Keita Mandjou, whose team take on Sarawak on the same day.

"Shahrazen's persistence in front of goal against Penang was excellent and both his goals were a direct result of his determination,"said DPMM head coach Buketa Ranko.

"Even though we had a break of nearly 50 days, the team were very strong mentally heading into the match as they knew it was a must-win game if we wanted to ensure third place.

"I was not happy with our performance in the first half, but after an angry half-time team talk we were a different side in the second half, which started with Shahrazen scoring his second goal after just a minute," added Ranko.

After a long pass by right back Shahrul Rizal Abd Rahman that evaded the Penang defence, Shahrazen won an aerial duel with the Penang goalkeeper to score his second goal of the night.

His first came in the 38th minute when he was quickest to the ball after the goalkeeper had saved his initial shot.

The match at Penang's City Stadium got off on the wrong note for the Bruneians when A Jaganathan scored from a penalty kick in the 25th minute after Shahrul Rizal was judged to have handled the ball in the box.

However, DPMM were quick to retaliate and equalised 10 minutes later when captain Rosmin Kamis showed outstanding concentration to latch on to a poor clearance by a Penang defender and score with a powerful shot.

Playing both Chilean Alejandro Tobar and South Korean Jeon Kyeong-joon in midfield, Ranko said he made three tactical changes as the game wore on one of them was converting Jeon to a striker in the last 20 minutes.

Ranko also added that he was happy none of the eight players who picked up two yellow cards since the season started were booked, leaving them available for tomorrow's date with Kedah.

"We don't need to worry about the math anymore as we are already guaranteed third place since Terengganu have no remaining matches and we have a plus six goal difference," said Ranko.

"This is an excellent result and we have shown everyone that DPMM can compete with the best even though we had many problems with imports and injuries."
