Saturday, August 4, 2007
TEN of Brunei's national silat exponents left for Bangkok yesterday to train with Thailand's athletes in preparation for the upcoming 2007 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
The group consists of Md Izzat Zaini, Khairul Azmi Sulaiman, Amali Abd Malik, Abd Rahim Bujang, Mohd Raziman Hussin, Mohd Kifli Hamzah, Mohd Fadillah Wahab, Pg Khairul Bahrin Pg Aliumar, Norleyermah Raya and Nurul Aimi Amalina Junaidi and is led by Pg Hj Jaludin Pg Salleh, the honorary secretary of the Brunei Darussalam National Silat Association (Persib).
Head coaches, Pg Hj Tajuddin Pg Salleh, Mochammad Nasri Junizal, Shahril Mayalin and Dk Nani Suryati Pg Hj Hussin, also joined the group.
According to Pg Hj Jaludin, the training stint, supported by the Department of Youth and Sports, was planned months ago to help sharpen the skills of the silat athletes.
He added that the overseas stint would provide the athletes with the much needed international exposure.
"Proper exposure is essential in preparing for the upcoming SEA Games," he said.
"We chose Thailand because as the host country for the SEA Games this year, they will be one of our toughest opponents," he added.
The group will be there from Aug 4 to 10 and will participate in training sessions with the Thais as well as take part in a mini tournament on Aug 7.
Pg Hj Jaludin said that the stint would also help the national team to familiarise themselves with the venues allocated for the Games and to have an idea of what to expect from their opponents.
The team hope to come back with a more accurate measure of the national athletes' current performance and to see what adjustments can be made to overcome their weaknesses.
