Friday, May 9, 2008
UK-BASED Islamic Relief (IR) prepared an emergency team to fly out to Myanmar at the earliest opportunity following tropical cyclone Nargis whose death toll was feared to have topped 100,000 so far.
"Contact is being made with potential partners on the ground and we need GBP 3 million to cover: plastic sheeting, tents, water purification tablets, water filters, hygiene kits, medicines, mosquito nets and food," stated IR website. Humanitarian assistance can be channeled by visiting its website (http://www.islamic-relief.com/submenu/Appeal/cyclone-nargis.asp) or calling Islamic Relief Malaysia branch telephone number +60389486334.
From the region, Bernama reported that MERCY Malaysia is sending a four-member relief team to Yangon, Myanmar, to assess the situation there. In a statement early this week, MERCY Malaysia said the team would be headed by its executive committee member Dr Heng Aik Cheng.
Describing the situation in Myanmar as very serious, the press statement said, "We hope to be there as soon as possible to provide great need for shelter, water sanitation and emergency medical treatment. These are important things that can save lives."
Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar on May 2, causing a huge devastation and making hundreds of thousands homeless. At last count, it was feared that the death toll has exceeded 100,000 people.
MERCY Malaysia said the relief team would also assess the type of immediate aid required. For a start, the team will be sending water purification sachets, medication, tarpaulins and plastic sheets for temporary shelter. People who wish to support MERCY's efforts to bring emergency humanitarian aid to the survivors of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, can channel their fund to MAYBANK account: MERCY Humanitarian Fund, account no. : 5621 - 7950 - 4126, ABA Swift Code: MBB EMY KLA or calling MERCY's headquarter +603 4256 9999, +603 4251 8435.
