Gifts for youth going on Ship programme to Japan

BRUNEIAN representatives for this year's Ship for Southeast Asia Youth Programme (SSEAYP) yesterday received sponsored items for their travel in the form of backpacks and T-shirts from Setia Motors.

Hj Abdul Hamid Hj Yahya, the commercial manager for Setia Motors, presented the donation to Brunei SSEAYP group national leader, Hj Mohammad Hafiy Abdullah Fong.

According to Assistant Youth Leader Natasha Halim, 30 backpacks and 30 T-shirts had been donated by Hyundai of Setia Motors.

"We can all wear it when we go on the programme, which we are very grateful for," she said.

She related that 30 Bruneians between the ages of 18 and 30 will be participating in the programme onboard the ship, which will set sail for Japan on October 22.

Altogether, there should be 330 participating youths involved in the programme, with each of the 11 participating countries — the 10 Asean nations and Japan — sending 30 representatives.

The programme's objective is to enhance ties between the Asean nations and Japan, and for a couple of months every year, the ship sets sail and visits each participating country.

Some of the activities conducted during the programme include cultural programmes and basic interaction between the youths, which are designed to to create a mutual understanding between them.

Ship for Southeast Asia Youth Programme has also received donations from BAG Networks Sdn Bhd, Abdul Razak Holdings, WISA Enterprise as well as Fitness Zone.

According to Natasha, the biggest sponsor so far as been Hj Adinin & Sons. The ship for Southeast Asian Youth Programme is based on the respective joint statement issued in 1974 between Japan and the five Asean founding members, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined in 1985.

By 1999, SSYEAP had extended to include all the 10 Asean member countries and Japan. For the past 32 years, over a total of 8,500 Asean and Japanese youths have participated in the programme.
