BRUNEI Darussalam is all geared up to host the 10th World Federation of Hainanese Associations congress, the largest non-governmental organisation meeting ever held in the country, which has attracted over 1,000 overseas delegates.
This congress will help jumpstart other non-governmental organisations in the sultanate to host such meetings at an international level, thereby boosting the tourism prospects of Brunei, Han Pau Ting, chairman of the steering committee told reporters yesterday.
In a press conference at the International Convention Centre, he said that many people doubted the abilities of a small country like Brunei to host the congress, hence the opportunity to prove that a small country does have the capability to host a large-scale meeting.
"If this congress is organised successfully, it will encourage other associations in the country to host such meetings, including the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Hockian Association," he said.
"It is an opportunity for people to discover the beauty and untapped opportunities of Brunei Darussalam," said Dr Yong Chee Tuan, a member of the organising committee secretariat.
"We are also introducing innovative ways of managing conferences because the task is demanding when more than 1000 delegates are involved," he said.
He noted that the use of information communications technology (ICT) is vital when the theme of the congress emphasises on moving forward and imparting knowledge to various communities.
ICT has significantly contributed to better quality of work and higher productivity, despite the limited resources, he added.
Han said that the congress' access passes, which will be distributed to delegates, has all the relevant information for the participants' convenience.
Instead of using booklets, delegates can find the conference schedule, map of the venue and their seating arrangements stated clearly on the passes, he explained.
The highlight of the congress is the Suki Nite, a gala dinner that will feature a combination of Eastern and Western cultures through musical and dancing performances at the International Convention Centre, Dr Yong said.
The Deputy Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah Hj Abd Wahab, is expected to officiate at the opening ceremony on October 15.
He said that participants are especially looking forward to greeting His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season, which also coincides with the duration of the congress.
Themed 'Impart Community Knowledge, Strengthen Collaborative Platform', the congress is jointly organised by Bandar Seri Begawan and Kuala Belait's Hainan Associations.
