HRH Prince Sufri pays a visit to ship

Thursday, November 1, 2007

MORE than 18,000 visitors have visited the MV Doulos, the oldest active ocean-going passenger ship, since it was opened to the public on Saturday.

Among the visitors that visited the ship was His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah. According to a press statement, His Royal Highness was greeted by Captain Ashley Mcdonald, Director Daniel Chae and other crew members.

Doulos, a Greek word for 'servant', was originally built in 1914 as a freighter named Medina, which was owned by United States' Mallory Steamship Company.

After serving nearly 30 years as a cargo ship, Medina was acquired by the Genativer group and registered in Panama as Roma. During her final cruise through the Greek Islands, representatives from the German charity Gute Bucher fur Alle (Good Books for All) were on board and decided to purchase the vessel in 1977. Doulos now carries over 6,000 different book titles, ranging from art, children's books, health, education and sports.

Over the past 28 years, Doulos has recorded over 20 million visitors and visited over 100 countries in Latin America, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Arabian Peninsula.

Every crew member on the ship is a volunteer.

The ship will cease its services in 2010, following new maritime regulations that prohibits ships made of wood to sail all over the world.
