THE civil service acts as a link between His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the people of the sultanate, and as a platform for the government to fulfil its responsibilities.
This was said by the Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office, Dato Paduka Hj Mustappa Hj Sirat, when emphasising the important role of the civil service.
Dato Hj Mustappa made the remark yesterday during the national celebration of the 14th Civil Service Day at the International Convention Centre (ICC). The permanent secretary was also the chairman of the event's organising committee.
The event was attended by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. Also present were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
This year's Civil Service, themed "Upholding Leadership Towards Prosperity", is in commemoration of His Majesty's 40-year reign and his wise and visionary leadership throughout that time that has brought prosperity and well-being of the people and the country.
The celebration saw Director-General of the Public Service Awang Sa Bali Hj Abas leading 40 administrative officers in reciting the Public Service Oath to His Majesty, to signify the 40th anniversary of His Majesty's accession to the throne.
This was followed by the Civil Service Anthem presented by the Civil Service choir. Lyrics to the anthem were written by Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Othman, while the song was composed by Fathan Hj Anuar.
The event was followed by a video presentation depicting the development of the public service throughout His Majesty's rule. The progress made in that time demonstrates His Majesty's concern towards his people and the desire to fulfil the people's demands and expectations through an efficient and responsive civil service.
The event yesterday also celebrated and recognised the contributions of civil servants who have retired, with His Majesty consenting to present the Service Record to 11 senior government officers who completed their service this year.
His Majesty then toured the Public Service Exhibition in the Concourse area of the ICC. The three-day exhibition is participated by all ministries and provides information on services provided by each ministry and the departments under it. The exhibition highlighted various aspects of public-service delivery and improvements and innovations of processes that have brought about positive impacts to both customers and clients.
Several companies from the private sector such as Infocom Federation of Brunei and TelBru also participated in the exhibition, which will be open to the public from November 10 to November 13 except for Sunday.
