Brunei to host 2009 global drug meeting

Thursday, December 6, 2007

BRUNEI Darussalam will host the next world conference of the International Federation of Non-Government Organisations for the Prevention of Drug and Substance Abuse (IFNGO) in 2009.

Slated for June, the international conference is set to attract hundreds of participants, said Datin Hjh Masni Hj Mohd Ali, president of the National Anti-Drug Association of Brunei (Basmida).

During the promotion of the 23rd IFNGO international conference at the IFNGO Asean NGOs workshop on drug abuse, she said that the conference will focus on discussions surrounding the theme of "Global Policies and Sustainable Programmes for Drug Demand Reduction".

The biennial conference is aimed at creating a benchmark on best practices on advocacy and campaigns for drug demand reduction.

It is also hoped that the international conference would achieve in analysing the impact of a drug-free society towards a globalised world, she said.

Furthermore, the conference will explore the role of media and information and communications technologies on drug demand reduction.

Datin Hjh Masni said the conference will also help establish linkages among youths, families and society to encourage a drug-free culture.

She said that there has been a good response of the IFNGO Asean NGOs workshop, which concluded yesterday.

"There were so many ideas to reduce recidivism (among drug addicts) from the workshop," she told The Brunei Times at the sidelines of the workshop.

She said that it is important to be optimistic in achieving a drug-free Asean 2015, and to come up with strategies to create an environment free of drug abuse.

"It is good to review the modality once in a while, to exchange ideas and adapt it into our system for our country's benefit," she added.

The president of Basmida also said that ex-drug addicts deserve a second chance, thus, the need for the general public to overcome their social stigma against former drug addicts.

Giving them a second chance is an effective way of reducing a relapse in drug abuse because not only does it help the person in society, but it also reduces costs.
