Celebrating Advent season with German high-tea
Thursday, December 6, 2007
WHILE many Christmas celebrants are anticipating the season to only start at the end of December, Lilo Cappell, wife of the German Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, kicked off the holiday season with an Advent Season high tea at their residence.
Inviting women from the International Women's Club, who consist of wives of foreign dignitaries and the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China, Madam Tong Xiao Ling, Cappell welcomed each of them and treated her guests to a baking demonstration as an introduction to the Christmas taste of traditional German bakery.
Infamous for her hospitality and warmth, Cappell welcomed three new members to the International Women's Club, presenting them with roses and a small token to commemorate their entry.
"This cake is one of Germany's most popular cakes. For your first birthday this is what you would have, and even as a Christmas cake," said Cappell, explaining the significance of the Guglhupf, a ringed marble cake. Cappell also called in a German chef from The Empire Hotel and Country Club, who did the pastry demonstration.
With all of the ladies' eyes firmly glued on the preparation table and recipe copies in their hands, Cappell and the chef took their time explaining the variety of cookies that could be made from simple butter cookie dough.
The Advent season is a period of preparation time before Christmas Day, which includes a number of activities such as feasts, candle-lighting and many others depending on the traditional background and culture.
