ANOTHER step forward. Another step to climb upon. As the Bruneians ushered in the new academic session, yesterday was a new day for students who have cleared successfully an important milestone in their academic life. Entering the Secondary One however, throws up a new challenge in their lives but young faces brimming with broad smile and determination that they are ready for it.

The Sayyidina Hassan Secondary School yesterday welcomed some 297 new Form One students for a briefing at the school's hall in Kampong Mulaut.

In her remark, the school's Principal, Cikgu Hjh Suriani Hj Noor Hashim assured the parents that the school would continuously observed and monitored the progress of their children's academic performance. She stressed that cooperation between the school and homes should be strengthened further in order to improve their children's achievement.

The new academic year also marks the commencement the interim curriculum of the SPN21, (National Education System for the 21st Century) introduced by the Education Ministry where this year's Secondary One students will have to undergo two years of lower secondary studies, instead of three years.

However Cikgu Hjh Suriani said that the school's new batch of Form One students will not be affected by this changes. They will still be using the existing curriculum and the scheme of work.

The Penilaian Sekolah Rendah or PSR Examination will remain a public examination this year while the Penilaian Menengah Bawah or PMB examination will be held for the last time in 2009 and there won't be anymore classes for repeaters.

Yesterday also marked the beginning of the students' orientation programme.

New Secondary One students at the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, in Jalan Muara, went for their registration yesterday.

The 298 students who managed to earn a place at the college will start their orientation tomorrow until January 9.

Welcoming the new students as well as their parents during the registration ceremony was the college's principal, Pengiran Hjh Sarah Pengiran Hj Kamaluddin. In her speech, she said that the students would be placed in 15 classes.

She also talked about the new national education system, the SPN21.

She said that for a student to be promoted to the next level, he/she has to pass the examination and has not less than 85 per cent in attendance.

"As the college does not have classes for repeaters, those who failed would be released from the college," she said.

The principal also briefed the students and parents on the facilities which include allowance, hostels or transport which the students are entitled to apply for.

The rules and regulations at the college were also touched in the briefing as well as on the Parents-Teachers Association of which parents automatically become members.

The Sayyidina Husain Secondary School also held a one-day orientation programme yesterday at the school's hall for over 200 fresh Form One students.

The school's principal Hjh Rosni Hj Mohd Amin, in her welcoming remark stressed that apart from the students' effort and hard work, parents' support, guidance and a harmonious household are key factors in achieving success.

"Otherwise, they will lose sight of life's path and not only slip in their studies but also find themselves involved in social ills to find peace of mind and the attention they need," she said.

With the start of the new education system this year, the SPN21, Hjh Rosni said hat there is still much to be done as achievements in 2007's PSR in certain subjects particularly English, Maths and Science are unsatisfactory.

"If this is the quality that students produce, it would be difficult for schools to offer challenging subjects that requires both creativity and maturity," she pointed out. "It's worrying that a similar trend can be observed with the PMB 2007 where the results have dropped almost all subjects".

The principal also touched on the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and the poor levels of participation that has been displayed so far. She told them that the association is an ideal opportunity for parents to contribute in and help with channelling their skills, ideas and energy for the benefits The general meeting for the PTA will be held in December this year and parents of students are automatically members. Both parents and students were also given briefings regarding academics, student welfare, guidance and counselling as well as discipline. Form teachers were introduced and students were guided to their respective classrooms for introductions and distribution of textbooks.
