Business conference to boost Brunei's competitive edge

Saturday, January 5, 2008

UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam's (UBD) business and management conference promises to enlighten participants on the challenges and opportunities in gaining a competitive edge in the so-called globalised economy, and an opportunity to exchange ideas and knowledge on the information communications technology era, said a lecturer.

With more than 50 working papers to be presented at the two-day conference, it is a meeting point for local and international academics and practitioners to discuss issues concerning the global economy, thus the theme of creating a competitive advantage in the global economy, said Dr Fadzliwati Mohiddin, who is also one of the secretaries of the conference's working committee.

"We do not want Brunei Darussalam to be left behind, so we need to take note of the challenges and opportunities that are available in the global economy,"she told The Brunei Times.

The university lecturer said that the organising committee from UBD's Faculty of Business, Economic and Policy Studies has been making preparations for the conference since May last year.

"The conference is not just discussing about the issues but what are the implications and how can it be implemented," said Anis Faudzulani Dzulkiflee, marketing lecturer at UBD.

She said that Brunei can learn from the best practices of the wide range of papers presented from speakers of various countries.

From these best practices, Brunei can then decide whether to follow, adopt and adapt to the situation, she explained.

"Brunei has to be part of it, we can't just be on our own because it is impossible for the economy to improve if we are not involved in bilateral and multilateral trade agreements in this era," said the lecturer, who is also one of the speakers in the conference.

She added that if Brunei is not competitive, it will stay backwards compared to other developing countries.

The conference which commences on January 8 will deal with globalisation issues, including the impact of technological advancement on businesses, international trade and sophisticated consumers, she said.

"It is a platform to lay out the issues and how to create strategies to address the implications for further improvement,"she added.

She said that the conference's organising committee is targeting at least 150 participants from the public and private sector.

Topics that will be discussed at the conference include small and medium enterprises and entrepreneurship, managing IT and e-business, leadership and change, as well as strategies for small states.
