Learn from Prophet's hijrah, Muslims urged

Saturday, January 5, 2008

FOURTEEN centuries have passed since Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) embarked on the legendary hijrah from Mekah to Medina, but lessons obtained from the journey can still be relevant in this day and age.

Imams yesterday reminded Muslims in the nation to learn from the historical journey, especially in self improvement, as it has changed the life of Muslims everywhere.

They explained that the journey or the hijrah is not just about moving from one place to another, but is also about leaving behind negative things, particularly those deemed as haram.

Those who realise they have negative traits or characteristics such as impatience, laziness and being quick to give up, were advised to try their own journeys towards being a Muslim who is polite, courteous and hardworking. Imams said that it is still not too late for those who have sinned. They can still repent and ask for forgiveness from Allah SWT to get back on the right path.

They also mentioned that any kind of positive changes in a person would not only benefit themselves but their families, society and country as well.

The close bond between Muslims is another lesson highlighted during the sermon yesterday. It was declared that regardless of nationalities and age, all Muslims are one another's sisters and brothers.

It was pointed out that in this time and age, people are forgetting how to love one another, particularly between people who have no family ties.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his followers left their homes and property in Mekah in search of Allah SWT's blessing and upon arrival in Medina, they were well received and were not left to suffer difficulties. They were given shelter, food, clothes and most importantly all that help was sincere, which was the third lesson to learn from.

One's intention must always be pure and not tainted with materialistic or false motives. The nation was advised to change, but should not be motivated by fear, embarrassment, to show off or because somebody told them to.

Imams also took the chance to remind the public that there will be prayers held in mosques, suraus and prayer halls nation-wide to mark the end of the Islamic year of 1428 and usher in the new Islamic year of 1429.
