HRD Services makes visit to students in UK
Wednesday, January 9, 2008
GIVEN the dynamism of university courses in the UK, and to keep abreast of these developments, senior staff from HRD Services Global Education Link made a visit to a number of higher education institutions in Eng-land, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Currently, around 1,300 to 1,500 Bruneians are studying in the UK for their diplomas, HNDs, Degrees and Masters courses as well as PhDs. According to Dr Smita Wimmer from HRD Services, universities are constantly reviewing their degree programmes to align them with the needs of industry and business. HRD Services made the trip to find out and provide the best information to Bruneian students.
It also gave them the chance to meet with Bruneian students and obtain their feedbacks.
During their visit, they took a closer look at the universities' facilities, and were briefed on courses and how these are relevant to Brunei's manpower needs.
They also met with senior university staff to discuss specific training issues such as subject areas that have restrictions upon accepting international students.
"Each university has different strengths and often it is not sufficient to look at the website to gauge a university's excellence," added Dr Wimmer.
She added that for vocational programmes, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland have different professional bodies and it is important to understand the emphasis placed in the course provision.
Despite that, students tend to focus on universities that are in close proximity to London when searching for appropriate institutions, and often Northern Ireland and Scotland are perceived as 'too far'.
As HRD Services Global Education Link has formal contractual agreements with a diverse range of universities and colleges and are also the representative for the British Universities Brunei Association, they provide free impartial consultancy services to students seeking university placement.
For further information on opportunities to studying abroad, HRD Services can be contacted at 2650800.
