Baby needs blood

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

A YOUNG girl is currently in urgent need of blood at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital (Ripas).

Doctors are still unable to identify what is wrong with the child, and her family is desperately trying their best to find blood for her.

Anisah Khalid, aged one and a half years old, is suspected of having leukemia, but doctors are still not certain and need to perform a bone marrow extraction in order to find out more.

According to doctors, Anisah will need a blood transfusion from blood type B+ in order for the doctors to perform this extraction.

"The doctors don't know what is wrong but her blood platelet count is very low at 40, when the normal amount for a girl her age should be 150. She had a blood transfusion earlier on and her blood platelet count still dropped to 40," said Natasha Halim, Anisah's aunt.

She added that the doctors discovered that her spleen is enlarged and her tummy has also begun to swell.

"There are people who have offered to donate blood but most of them can only do it after office hours but the blood bank is opened during office hours so they have to come during that time. One of the problems that we are facing now is that we have donors but they can't donate," said Natasha.

Natasha Halim also added that people who are interested in donating blood, they should visit the blood bank at Ripas hospital during office hours.

When asked whether the family has planned for contingencies if they do not receive the blood in time, she said, " I'm not sure, so far that hasn't been discussed".

She added that she has asked help from friends and family members by sending text messages to about 50 people.
