Girl Guides' Association of Brunei has come a long way

Saturday, January 26, 2008

THE Girl Guides' Association of Brunei Darussalam or Persatuan Pandu Puteri Brunei Darussalam is a guiding organisation in Brunei.

Like all Scouts and Guides organisations, it aims to develop character in children and young people by promoting Scouting principles.

The Girl Guides' Association of Brunei Darussalam is a girls and women only organisation.

Founded in 1951, it became a full member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1996.

Dayang Hjh Siti Hafsah binti Hj Abdul Halim serves as Chief Commissioner, while Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna is the President and Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha serves as Royal Patron.

Girl Guides and Brownies have thus far been featured on two sets of postage stamps issued in Brunei. A set of five stamps celebrates the movement.

Another set, celebrating the International Year Against Drug Trafficking and Abuse, features a Brownie and a Girl Guide on one of the stamps.

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts has in the past organised a partnership visit to the Girl Guides' Association of Brunei Darussalam Headquarters in Kampung Anggerek Desa.

According to the Chief Commissioner of the Girl Guides' Association of Brunei Darussalam, Dayang Hjh Siti Hafsah binti Hj Abdul Halim, the purpose of the visit, among other things was to work in partnership with member organisations and to record their performance and progress in WAGGGS' six core areas of work, namely, education programme, training for adults, structure and management, relationship to society, finance and membership.

Examining these areas help the country's Girl Guides' Association to identify its strengths, weaknesses, challenges and opportunities in the current situation.

Today, there are 1,700 members who have registered with the Co-curriculum Education Department. The Brunei Times
