AS A step towards gaining export market exposure, sixty-one local small medium enterprises (SMEs) were provided the foundation to strengthen their marketability by displaying their own products in the Local Product Festival 2008 yesterday.

The festival, organised by the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR), is a continuation of the same festival which was held in other districts last year and aimed at increasing awareness of local products in the local market.

Launching yesterday's Brunei-Muara festival, which was held at the Sumbangsih Mulia building in Beribi, was Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Ahmad Jumat, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources.

The festival marks the sixth Local Product Festival that has been held and will run for a week, ending on February 3. The ministry has noted an increase in participation by the local companies this year whereby the number of participation in previous festivals has never exceeded 50.

This encouraging response from local entrepreneurs is viewed as a stimulation for the ministry to hold similar exhibitions in order to provide a wider exposure for SMEs to produce and promote their local products to residents of the country.

Exposing local products in such festivals is also hoped to increase the export value of local products which will in turn strengthen and diversify the country's economy. The week-long festival will also serve as a catalyst to open up opportunities for public and private partnership.

The products showcased at the festival featured a variety of products ranging from traditional handicrafts to local food products such as biscuits, cakes and other delicacies.

The ministry will be furthering their efforts to expose local SMEs with an Investment and Business Mission in Kuching on March this year.

A briefing by the ministry and a business matching event will be taking place between 52 local companies and entrepreneurs from Sarawak.

According to Siti Abidah Alli of the Promotion and Facilitation Services Division at the ministry, the event is aimed to expose local companies for joint venture opportunities with entrepreneurs from Sarawak.
