Think producer, not consumer: MIPR

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

BRUNEI'S society will not be at leisure if it only exists in a "consumer society" as opposed to a "producer society", said Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Ahmad Jumat, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources.

"The consumer society that currently exists in Brunei is still not balanced with the concept of producer society," said the minister during the launch of the Local Product Festival 2008 yesterday.

According to the minister, Brunei seems to be lacking in the vision and capability to become a producer society.

"This will produce serious complications for the country's economy in the future."

"The civilisation of a country will not develop if it hangs onto utilising ideas of other people's," he said. "The superior mark of a country will also depend on its ability to come up with ideas and innovations of its own."

Capability, proactive attitude and commitment are some of the attributes required to bring Brunei towards being a producer society, he added.

"Aside from promoting local products to the domestic market, this festival serves as a bigger agenda in forming Brunei into a producer society," he said.

The festival, which serves as an outlet to promote and raise awareness of local products to the residents of the country, is also aimed at bringing local companies to the export market.

According to surveys by the Promotion and Facilitation Services Division at the ministry, 33 companies have the potential to move towards the export market.

The minister further urged the assembly to encourage the youth to develop a more entrepreneurial attitude and made mention of the Entrepreneurial Development Centre and Accreditation Centre in Sinaut which contains a number of programs, including an incubation programme.

Following his speech, the minister took the pleasure to tour the 61 individual booths showcasing various local products such as traditional handicraft and local food.

Well-known companies such as Seri Pekatan, Ferre Cake House and Pinetree Trading were among the participants among the 61 local SMEs.

The week-long festival ends on February 3.
