Good morals to cure social ills

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam will establish a unit that is responsible in coordinating religious affairs, to ensure that the university would not "run away" from Islam.

The establishment of the unit was disclosed by the university's Vice Chancellor, Dato Dr Hj Ismail Hj Duraman, in his speech at the 'Tasawwuf Islam' Seminar at the university yesterday.

The vice chancellor also highlighted the importance of learning tasawwuf, as it is a basic knowledge that is related with the development as well as the creation of akhlak or morals. The knowledge is capable in nurturing and guiding a Muslim towards having a better and respectable moral, he said.

He cited a scholarly research that learning tasawwufis capable in solving social ills and problems affecting society today.

If tasawwuf was successfully integrated to the whole Islamic ummah, social ills can then be cured, eliminating them from society, he stressed.

Head of the Usuluddin Department, Mohamad Hazmi Hj Ahmad Daud said the seminar focused on Tasawwuf Islam and its influence in society.

The seminar was aimed at introducing tasawwuf and provide exposure on the importance of tasawwuf in Brunei's Islamic society.

It was also hoped that the seminar would expose any kind of deviation in tasawwuf, especially on tariqat tasawwuf and its teachings, as data showed some Bruneians were deviating from the aqidah (faith) of Muslims.

The half-day seminar featured six speakers, of which five of them were lecturers at the institute and one invited local speaker, Dato Seri Setia Hj Kassim Hj Lamat.

Out of the presentations, two of them were delivered in Arabic.

The two Arabic papers were loosely translated to "Peranan Tasawwuf dalam Menyerlahkan Imej Masyarakat Islam didalam Dunia Islam" by Dr Abdul Muthalib Afwardeen and "Bagaimana Tasawwuf Memberi Petunjuk Amal Islam" by Dr Sayyed Abdul Hamid Al-Mahdaly.
