Sermon urges nation to protect environment

Saturday, February 2, 2008

IMAMS yesterday urged the nation to take the responsibility of protecting and preserving the environment. The call referred to everyone, including government officers, farmers, factory owners, restaurant owners, developers and the general public.

The Friday sermon yesterday touched upon the importance of protecting the environment, including water, air, forests and animals as all are created by Allah (SWT) to complement human lives.

As a human, it is obvious to hope for a life with convenience, happiness and comforts. Therefore, one should be grateful to Allah (SWT) who has provided the basic needs of life, the sermon highlighted.

The sermon also mentioned that the humans who have been given the power to think and reason, should and foremost safeguard and conserve the earth, according to what it deserves, and not by destroying or polluting it.

Muslims were reminded that Allah (SWT) do not like those who cause damage or destruction to the earth. It should always be guarded to make good use of.

Imams nationwide told the congregants that there have been cases of causing damage to the environment because of irresponsible acts on the part of humans that has brought disaster to themselves such as air and river pollution, landslides and floods.

Congregants were then reminded that every disaster occurred due to their own doing and action. Lately, some areas of the country have been affected by flashfloods.

The issue of flashfloods being a common scene was also highlighted by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in his titah in conjunction with the new Hijrah year 1429.

The sermon then quoted the titah which urged the problems be handled immediately, especially in the areas prone to floods. The monarch said that the problems resulted from neglect of water systems or drainage, caused by an overgrowth of vegetation that disrupted or blocked the flow of water.

Towards the end, Imams advised Muslims to not forget the safety of the environment, while seeking wealth. Contractors or developers were cautioned to always obey the rules and acts stipulated by the government.

Muslims in the country were also told to be grateful as they can still inhale fresh air, have a good health and live in a peaceful and prosperous country.
