ATTAINING 11 A's in 'O' Levels is no easy feat, but in the case of multi-talented and multi-lingual Andrew Kaoy Yi Jie, he did just that.

Hailing from Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB, Kaoy's academic life has been riding on from one success story to another. Firstly, as a multi-linguist, he is proficient in Mandarin, of which was accredited by E-Huawang, Brunei's first and only Chinese Informative website, Bahasa Melayu and English.

In terms of being multi-talented, he has been active in a long list of competitions and has won several titles. In literary work, he won first prize in the Chinese language writing competition, where his essay "Never Give Up" moved the judges, telling the story of his experience competing in an international piano competition.

Other local achievements included winning the National Energy Competition organised by Ministry of Energy at the Prime Minister's Office where he helped his teammates bring home the National Champion Trophy by his fluent use of the Malay language.

During the Chinese Chess Championship 2007, organised by the Association of Chinese Chess, Brunei, Kaoy emerged as champion and was also a winner of the International Chess Competition organised by St Margaret's School.

On the international level, Koay has participated twice at the International Competitions and Assessments for School organised by the University of New South Wales, last year, where he scored perfect marks for computer and was awarded gold medal for chemistry. It is his fifth gold medal achieved in the competition that attracts 13,000 participants from Asia.

In the Asia Pacific Maths Olympia, he has been champion for three consecutive years.

Despite his excellent track record, not everything about Koay revolves around academics and winning gold medal awards. Like any other typical student from a Chinese-medium school, he is also an athlete and played badminton and table tennis for the school team. His success exemplifies the school's main objective in developing well-rounded students. The Brunei Times
