HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam met with Yang Jiechi, Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China yesterday afternoon, as Istana Nurul Iman was the first official stop during his short stay in the sultanate.

Following his meeting with His Majesty, the Chinese foreign minister continued on with his packed itinerary with a courtesy call on His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Last night, the Chinese foreign minister also attended a dinner hosted by HRH Prince Mohamed at his official residence at Bukit Kayangan.

In a written interview reported by the Brunei Times, Yang had cited the great potential for cooperation between Brunei and China in the oil and gas sector. China is also interested in venturing towards putting together economic and trade consultation mechanisms to further new ways of expanding business ties with the sultanate.

Yang will also be taking in the sights and scenes of Bandar Seri Begawan today, starting with a river cruise along the Brunei River alongside visits to the Brunei Museum in Kota Batu as well as the Royal Regalia Museum in the capital.

Recently the foreign minister has been on a whirlwind tour, visiting Albania, Norway and Cambodia, prior to his visit to Brunei Darussalam. Yang will be continuing onto Australia where he is scheduled to meet with Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, where the two ministers will discuss the possibility of starting up a China-Australia strategic dialogue. The Brunei Times
