ILLITERACY were among the issues highlighted by Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Haji Abu Bakar Haji Apong, Minister of Communications, last night at the Musabaqah Tilawah Al-Quran (recital) Competition's closing ceremony at Dewan Raya, Radio Television Brunei to mark the one year opening of University Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (Unissa).
"One-fifth of the world is Illiterate. Illiteracy, is a problem not only for developing and developed countries, but as well as Islamic countries," said Pehin Dato Haji Abu Bakar in his speech, adding that more non-Muslims are adopting the teachings of Islam specifically in areas of finance and the need for Muslims to push forward and gain more knowledge before such teachings are dominated by non-Muslims.
He also emphasised that research and development is also an important element for a university as an indicator of how a university can become renowned and prestigious and encourage Muslims to fully utilise the Holy Quran.
"With these events, it would help bring closer ties with institutions of higher learning in this region and in the country especially for the public," said Dr Haji Mohd Haji Damit, deputy Rector of Unissa, adding that this event would give participants the opportunity to show their abilities in reciting the Holy Quran.
The winners for this year's competition were Muhd Fahmi Haji Metussin for the Qari category and Amal Nazirah Haji Asmat for the Qariah category. Both are from the Seri Begawan University College of Religious Teachers.
