UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam's multipurpose hall was filled with students wishing to pursue further studies during the Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University's (Unissa) open day yesterday as the university prepares to take in the second intake for 2008/2009 academic session.
Students who passed their GCE 'O' and 'A' level examinations flocked to the hall hoping to get information on courses and programmes available at the university.
According to an officer from Unissa, during the morning session, more than 350 people came and the number increased as the day went by.
At a similar event last year, more than 1,000 people turned up.
Present at the open day to brief the students on the various courses were the Deputy Rector, Dr Hj Md Yusop Hj Awg Damit, Assistant Rector, Dr Hjh Masnon Hj Ibrahim, Academic Consultant, Prof Datuk Dr Abdul Munir Yaacob, as well as Deans of every faculty to answer queries from the students.
One of the visitors, a graduate of the Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah told The Brunei Times that she has applied to all three main high educational institutions in the country, including Universiti Brunei Darussalam and the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers College University (KUPU SB), as she liked to keep her options open.
Hjh Umi Kalsum Hj Roslan admitted that she is more interested to study in Unissa as the universityoffers wider choices in religious studies, although the university is still new.
The 20-year-old expressed her confidence that Unissa would progressed well and be in the league as other already established institutions in Brunei Darussalam.
She said after consultation and giving it deep consideration she finally decided to apply for Bachelor degree in Usuluddin at Unissa.
In addition to its existing programmes, Unissa is introducing a new course this year, the Bachelor of Law, under the Faculty of Syariah and Law with English as the medium of instruction.
