THE Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Brunei Darussalam yesterday hosted a graceful reception at the International Convention Centre, in Berakas, to celebrate the 29th Anniversary of the Islamic Revolution of Iran.
Brunei Darussalam's second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Paduka Lim Jock Seng was the guest of honour on the occasion.
Among those attended the function was ambassadors and high commissioners from more than 21 countries. The event started with the national anthems of Brunei Darussalam and Iran.
In his welcoming address on the occasion, Iran's Ambassador to Brunei, His Excellency Abolfazl Khazaee said that the relations between the governments and people of Brunei Darussalam and Iran had always enjoyed the support of the leaders of both countries.
He went on to say that "during the recent years these relations have further expanded because of the existence of similarities in the political, religious and cultural field."
Brunei and Iran established diplomatic relations in 1993.
The ambassador added that the two countries had been cooperating with each other in the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) and United Nations Organisation (UN).
He expressed hope that exchange of high level delegations between the two countries would pave the way for the further expansion of bilateral relations.
"I am happy to state that next week Tehran will host the official visit of Brunei's second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Paduka Lim Jock Seng," he said adding that Iran was willing to expand cooperation with Brunei Darussalam.
The ambassador was of the view that there was a great potential for the cooperation between both oil producing Muslim countries.
Abolfazl Khazaee maintained that Iran had always tried to preserve peace and tranquillity in the sensitive and important region of the Persian Gulf.
"The foreign policy of Iran has always been based on respecting mutual independence and friendship with other countries, and in this regard the great importance has been given to expansion of relations with Islamic and Asian countries."
He pointed out that there was a great expansion and progressive development in Iran's economy last year.
"Iran's trade and commerce with different countries expanded to more than US$ 100 billion during this period and Asian countries were amongst the greatest beneficiaries of the trade."
In the scientific and technological fields, Iran has made great progress particularly in the area of using atomic energy for peaceful means and also using bio-technology and nanotechnology for the health and pharmaceutical industries.
The Iranian ambassador said his country has always respected the people's right to vote and next month there would be parliamentary elections in Iran.
