BRUNEI and China economic relations recorded a two-way trade volume of US$355 million in 2007, an all time high since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1991.

The figure was disclosed by Her Excellency Tong Xiaoling, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China. The total trade volume was an increase of 12.2 per cent from 2006. This was stated by her during the Chinese Embassy's high tea reception for the local media at the ambassador's residence. During the reception, the ambassador reflected upon the positive progress achieved between Brunei and China. The exchange of high level visits and mutual political trust further strengthened relations between our two countries, said Tong.

China's State Councillor and Defence Minister General Cao Gangchuan, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi were among the many Chinese senior officials who have visited Brunei in recent months.

She also noted progress in bilateral cooperation in the areas of culture, education, health, defence and especially media, where both countries have developed an effective platform for interaction and cooperation. China hosted the inaugural 10+3 Media Cooperation Forum and the Asean Radio and TV Seminar for News Officials and Managers last year.

The year 2008 is a very important year for China, said Tong.

This year, China marks the 30th anniversary of the country's open door policy. Leaders, athletes and media from more than 100 countries will converge in China when the capital city of Beijing hosts the 2008 Olympics, themed 'One World, One Dream' in August.

China is looking forward to His Majesty's visit to Beijing, who will also play host to the Seventh Asia Europe Meeting (Asem 7) in October this year.

"I believe 2008 will be a fruitful year for cooperation between Brunei and China," said Tong. The ambassador also highlighted other coming events such as China's preparations to mark the 600th anniversary of the death of Sultan Abdul Majid Hasan, who according to China's historical records passed away in Nanjing in 1408.
