THE Royal Brunei Police Force Forest Rangers successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle several gallons of fuel during their routine patrol on February 23.
The Rangers said that while patrolling the mouse trails in Kampong Junjongan they spotted from the distance two men carrying several gallons of unknown liquid in containers over to the other side of the border.
Linggang Anak Ngadi, one of the forest Rangers, said that when they came out of the police patrol car to investigate, the two men fled leaving two plastic containers containing 30 litres petrol each, and one empty 20 litres container.
He said that they gave them a chase but the two men managed to escape into the bushes over on the other side. They then made a report and went on to inspect the area further. It was then that one of the officers stumbled onto two more containers of petrol which were hidden in the bushes.
The officer said almost half an hour after the discovery of the last two containers , they were approached by a man who claimed that the petrol was his and that he was bringing it over to a relative's house who happened to be holding a family function at the time.
As he was the only person that was found around the scene at the time of the incident, the forest rangers filed a report and took him in for further questioning.
According to the report, the man was a permanent resident of Brunei who claimed to have family here and worked in the oil and gas company in Belait, was on his way to a family function.
The reports also stated that along with the 120 litres of petrol and one empty container, a motorcycle which was believed to have been used, in the smuggling attempt, was also found abandoned at the scene. All evidence found during that day was later brought to Limau Manis Police Station for further investigations. The routine patrol of the area was carried out by five forest rangers on a routine National Day patrol of the borders and mouse trails. The Brunei Times
