Upgrade to attract more tourists, Kg Senukoh told

Friday, March 7, 2008

TEMBURONG's Kampung Senukoh must upgrade its facilities and introduce more activities to attract more tourists, said a business development manager of a travel agency.

"Unless Senukoh makes some improvements in its activities, I do not think it will be enough to draw in the tourists," according to Nor Daud Durai of Pan Bright Travel Service.

Representatives from travel agencies proposed that Senukoh should be one of the stops included in a series of village visits in a tour of Temburong.

"They must update their activities, perhaps development is needed with the help of eco-tourism," said Sugumaran Nair of Freme Travel Services Sdn Bhd.

He also expressed concerns over safety issues, especially with the boats used for the river cruise.

Renovations of one of the nearby schools was also suggested to increase the number of activities in the village.

Currently, activities offered to tourists include the making of kelupis, a Malay delicacy, traditional games, handicrafts and a cruise of the Senukoh river.

Another attraction at Senukoh is the availability of freshwater giant brown prawns, which can be caught during the river cruise, and later dined upon in a traditional hut floating on the river.

The concept of kampung, or village homestay was also introduced, where tourists who wish to spend the night have a choice of staying in one of the traditional homes located within the village.

Senukoh aims to offer these activities as part of a package tour for a group of 10 to 20 people, which was inclusive of transport and meals.

Sheikh Jamaluddin Sheikh Mohamed, chief executive officer of Brunei Tourism, other tourism officials, as well as representatives from travel agencies and hotels in Brunei yesterday made a trip to Kampung Senukoh to study the possibility of developing the village as a tourist hotspot.

The working visit was part of the "Kenali Negara Kita" (Know Your Country) campaign.

Kampung Senukoh is located approximately 20km from Bangar Town, far from the reaches of mobile network coverage.

One can reach Senukoh by a 45 minute jetty ride along the meandering tributaries lined by the continuous bank of nipah trees, followed by 15 minutes of travel by bus.

Isolated from the hustle and bustle of city life, Senukoh has kept its authentic traditional, serene lifestyle and is home to rice paddy farmers of either Murut or Malay Kedayan races.
