Public's cooperation needed for fire fighters to be effective, says Perm Sec Pg Abd Haris

THE Public needs to provide their cooperation and joint responsibility for the Fire and Rescue Department to effectively carry out their jobs.

This was stated by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs Pg Abd Haris Pg Hj Shabudin at the marching parade to mark the 48th year anniversary celebration of the Fire and Rescue Department's establishment.

Some of the simple steps that the public can do include taking necessary precautions in the case of fire and to comply with fire safety rules that should be below the set standards.

The very simple steps is the most basic of common sense and can even be enough to save loved ones or disaster from happening.

Furthermore, the permanent secretary pointed out that the Fire and Rescue Department needed to increase their quality of services, responsibilities because current trends in the country's development comes with many new challenges.

"Expectations and hopes of the people towards the Fire and Rescue Department and their services will move with the current trends along with the challenges, and it is crucial for the department to be constantly ready to face these challenges," said Pg Abd Haris.

He also called on the personnel of the Fire and Rescue Department to constantly be proactive in "managing changes" and to bring about more comprehensive and effective strategic plannings.

The permanent secretary also took the opportunity to laud the department in their services of the recent floods in Temburong.

The Fire and Services Department has come a long way since it was introduced in 1960 where it has not only gone through a name change from Fire Unit under the Royal Brunei Police Force to Fire Services Department in 1967.

It was officially changed to Fire and Services Department and officiated by the Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Adanan Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Mohd Yusof.

During the event, prizes were awarded to the best Fire and Rescue Services Department branch, where first place was won by the Lamunin Fire Station and is under the leadership of Tahir Haji Moktal.

The event was held at the Fire and Rescue Training Centre at Perpindahan Lambak Kanan.

The Brunei Times
