BRUNEI is looking for more business opportunities in the gas industry beyond 2013, when current supply contracts to Japan and South Korea expire.
The Minister of Energy is leading a delegation of more than 20 officials at the 23rd International Conference Exhibition for LNG, LPG and Natural Gas Industries (Gastech) 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand, to showcase the country's oil and gas industry and seek for potential customers.
Brunei continues to invest heavily in hydrocarbon exploration and improved technology in its upstream and midstream energy sectors, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar was quoted in a press release issued by BLNG yesterday.
He said that Brunei's achievements have been due to a continuing high-level of national and international partnership, during his keynote address at the opening of the conference and exhibition.
"It is with this firm belief in the value of partnership that Brunei is ready to continue contributing to the world's energy needs," Pehin Dato Hj Yahya said.
The minister said that exploring for hydrocarbons is becoming more difficult and more costly to develop, thus the importance of partnership between shareholders and stakeholders in addressing such challenges.
This includes partnership between resource holders and the international industry, or between national and international companies, he added.
He further noted the effects of high oil prices and a possible peak of global oil production, while environmental issues call for countries and companies to cooperate in tackling global warming.
"While these concerns serve to reinforce gas as the preferred alternative fuel, global gas production is also bound to peak as supply continues to work hard to keep up with demand," he continued.
Brunei is joining more than 300 exhibitors from 36 countries at the Gastech 2008 exhibition, which covers a total floor area of 12,200 sq metres.
Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who launched Gastech 2008, also toured Brunei's pavilion which features Brunei as a world class and reliable LNG producer.
The exhibit's theme of 'A Proven LNG Player, Ready for More Business,' aims to convey that Brunei is open to talks not just with existing buyers, but potential new customers at the same time, the press statement added. Held from March 10-13, the conference and exhibition saw less than 50 countries participating this year.
The conference includes talks and discussions on application and utilisation of gases, natural gas and LNG facilities, as well as sustainable growth in natural gas.
