His Majesty leaves for Senegal to take part in OIC summit

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, left the sultanate yesterday evening for Senegal, to attend the 11th Summit of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference there.

Present at the airport to send His Majesty off for his departure to Dakar were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik.

His Majesty will be attending the 57-nation Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), which is holding a summit on March 13 until 14 in Senegal.

The summit, entitled 'Islam in the 21st Century', will examine the current events and challenges facing Muslims all over the world, in particular the issues concerning Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Somalia and Darfur.

Issues of Islamophobia, a term coined as discrimination or prejudice against Islam or Muslims, will be one of the main agendas for the summit, as the first report on Islamophobia by the OIC Islamophobia Observatory will be released and proceeded with discussions on the first report of an Islamophobia monitoring committee. About 30 heads of state from the Middle East, Africa and Asia are expected in Dakar. Recently, a two-day meeting by senior officials of the OIC Member States was concluded in Senegal in preparation for the Foreign Ministers' meeting which began on March 10.

Among the issues discussed during the Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) were summit's agenda, the revised OIC Charter, the final communique, and the resolutions of the summit to be presented to the Foreign Ministers' meeting and consequently to the summit tomorrow.The Brunei Times
