LOCAL artiste Lily Chiam is representing Brunei at the Francophone Mumbai Music Festival to help promote the country's culture and the home-grown music industry in the international arena.

Brunei is sending Chiam as the first-ever representative to the annual music festival, organised by Alliance Francaise.

Chiam, owner of Expression Music in Kiulap, was expected to collaborate with Bulgaria Idol Stefan Lalchev in a piano performance.

"I'm very excited about the event," said Chiam, whose husband and children sent her off at the airport yesterday.

She said joining the festival would help expose Brunei's culture and introduce the music industry to other countries.

Chiam would perform songs from the French album Mistral Gagnant and play traditional musical instruments, including drums.

Chiam is accompanied by the director of Brunei's Alliance Francaise, Cyrielle Bazin, who had similar experiences organising such events in Bulgaria.

Bazin said they interviewed other local artistes to participate in the event, but selected Chiam, who not only owns a music studio, but was also passionate about her music and promoting Brunei's music industry overseas.

The Francophone Music Festival aims to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and also share Francophone cultures with the world.

"It's an exchange of Franco and Brunei culture," said Bazin, who was quite excited as it is the first for Brunei to join 14 other countries in the festival.

Brunei is the only Asian country to be involved in the event, which will be televised by Channel Five in France.

Francophone refers to a linguistic and cultural community of more than 170 million people in 54 countries.

The use of French in varying degrees in their lives is a characteristic of this community.

Another aspect is the fusion of their native cultures with French culture.

Chiam will be releasing her album titled Together on May 11.

With the album's release, she hopes to showcase to the world the potential of the local music industry.
