Monarch inspects every aspect of battalion in his first visit since its relocation

THE Third Battalion of the Royal Brunei Land Force in Lumut was in for a surprise when a helicopter carrying His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam descended upon the area yesterday morning.

His Majesty made his first stop at the Third Battalion headquarters, visiting the records department, the salary office and meeting rooms in the main administrative building, and paid close attention to the furnishings and various equipment.

The monarch then led the delegation to another building where logistics were located and proceeded to the single barracks, which was in the same building.

His Majesty, who is also the Minister of Defence and Supreme Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, then moved on to the dining hall where foreign workers on duty found themselves shy and yet excited to be in the presence of the monarch.

In addition to the dining hall, His Majesty later made his way to the Corporals' Club, Sergeants' Mess and Officers' Mess. Just along the corridors was the surau where His Majesty even tried out the water supply.

His Majesty also took the chance to inspect the quartermasters, where furniture and supplies are stored and took a look at the food ration. Taking a vehicle to the other side of the area, His Majesty was brought to the Third Battalion's gymnasium, swimming pool as well as the track and field.

A fair walking distance from there was the married quarters, which His Majesty also inspected closely.

One of the other important sections of the Third Battalion that His Majesty visited was the medical facilities, where he witnessed a medical check in progress, had a look at the wards and even walked in on a recruit going through a routine dental check up.

Before departing, His Majesty was greeted by a guard of honour. And he also took the opportunity to inspect the backpacks weighing an average 20kg carried by the recruits.

The surprise visit was the first for His Majesty since the Third Battalion was officially relocated from its home of 13 years in Penanjong Garison in Tutong to their current site in Lumut Camp on June 21, 2007.

On hand to receive His Majesty upon his arrival was the Deputy Minister of Defence, Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Paduka Hj Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar, Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General Dato Paduka Seri Hj Halbi Hj Md Yussof , and the Commanding Officer of the Third Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Aziz Hj Abdul Rahman.
