BSB hit by power outage
Wednesday, April 9, 2008
SOME OF the busiest parts of Bandar Seri Begawan were incapacitated yesterday afternoon due to an electrical supply disruption.
The power outage was attributed to a problem with one of the main machineries at Gadong Power Station II.
The authorities did not specify the exact type of machinery involved, but when contacted yesterday and according to a spokesperson from the Department of Electrical Services (DES), the relevant personnel were already working on the case.
Muhammad Abdullah, the department's public relations officer, said that senior officials from DES, including its engineers, as well as the director, were already on site to remedy the situation before nightfall.
Among the measures taken included diverting electrical loads to backup transformers, which they had to do carefully so as to not overload any one of the backup transformers.
That was part of the contingency plan for national power outage incidents, said Muhammad.
Rabino Akoi, who was manning the department's hotline, said that the incident was reported as early as 3pm.
Confirming that the fault was located at Power Station II in Gadong, Rabino said that the hotline received countless calls from all over Bandar Seri Begawan including from the Old Airport area, Tungku, Rimba, Terunjing; Kiarong, Menglait and Gadong. Power was restored to all affected areas by 5.30pm yesterday. (SRH)
